H.C. Frick: America’s Most Hated Man

By Samuel Phineas Upham

Henry Clay Frick is best known today for the extensive art collection he donated to the city of New York, as well as his mansion and its furnishings to be used as a public art gallery. The gallery is small compared to most modern museums, but the collection of old master paintings is still something worth celebrating.

He earned the title of “Most Hated Man” through two specific actions. The first took place in 1889, but the buildup began a few years prior. Frick had created a fishing club, which included Andrew Carnegie and a few of his friends. Frick was a business partner of Carnegie’s, and, although Carnegie didn’t acknowledge it much, Frick was responsible for much of Carnegie’s fortunes. His fishing club consisted of roughly 60 members, who came across a dam in need of repair.

It happened that this dam was positioned near Johnstown, which was home to a steel rival of Andrew Carnegie. While there is little direct evidence to prove otherwise, historical documents suggest strongly that this fishing group made inadequate repairs to the dam, and, when heavy winter snows fell, the dam burst.

The second incident occurred three years later. Frick and Carnegie were arguing over how to deal with the Homestead Steel Strike, which got so bad that both sides were armed. Frick decided to hire Pinkerton strike detectives (notoriously violent men who existed solely to break up striking workers), and a small scuffle ensued that ended in the deaths of nine workers.

An assassination attempt was later made on Frick over this incident. Frick survived two gunshot wounds to the neck, and four stab wounds to the leg as he and an associate wrestled with his assailant. The attempt brought discredit to the worker’s movement, and made labor unpopular in the press. As a result, the public chose to express their general discontent with a moniker they felt fit the man.

Examples of Troubled Teen Programs

Article written by Career Advantage Portal

Troubled teenagers require the proper support to get their life back on track.

If you are one of the many parents that struggle with their troubled teenager at home, know that there is hope. There are numerous programs that provide the support that you and your child need to turn around their life and change their habits. Here are some examples of support programs that you may be interested in.

Summer camps operate for about 3 months during the summer season. These camps are filled with outdoor activities, bonding time with other members, academic assignments, and more. Note that this is a short-term program and can be used in conjunction with school enrollment. This does not affect his or her enrollment status.

A boot camp for teenagers is essentially a military-hardened program that utilizes harsh discipline and regimented schedules to push your teenagers into good behavior. Remember, this camp may not be for everybody as emotionally-fragile individuals may break and become scarred for long periods of time.

There are a variety of boarding schools that can be with or without religion involved. There are gender separated options if you feel the need to allocate your child to their gender. A boarding school for boys typically functions differently than that of a boarding school for girls. You’ll want to do some background research on each school that you are interested in to see if they are accredited as well as what they offer are beneficial and provide actual support to your teens.

Sending your child to a troubled school is always a difficult decision as you’ve been holding their hand since their first breath. They’ll always be your little jewel no matter how old they get. Give them the support and the foundation that they need to find their true self.

Wood Creek Academy offers accredited troubled youth programs. Located in the rugged mountains of rural Western Montana, this remote setting is the ideal environment for struggling teens to begin a positive direction in their lives.

Choosing Between Living On-Campus and Off-Campus

Article written by Educational Solutions, keeping you informed in educational matters

Your freshman year in college should be a memorable one. Not only will you interact with a variety of social clubs, but you’ll also receive the freedom of living an independent life. This means living on your own and caring for yourself without thChoosing-Between-Living-On-Campus-and-Off-Campuse help of mom and dad.

You’ll need to decide whether you want to live on-campus or off-campus. Colleges often charge a hefty amount per year for students choosing to live on campus, which will leave you with ultimately making a decision. Here is a breakdown on the positives of both.

Living on-campus will put you directly in the middle of the social life that colleges have to offer. You’ll most likely end up being more involved with school activities and events hosted by the different clubs on campus. If you want to enjoy the numerous social gatherings and the clashing of cultures, then the on-campus lifestyle is right for you.

Finding an apartment off-campus will not only save you money, but you won’t necessarily be grouped up with the same people in your age group. You won’t directly be on campus and will have the freedom to live in a much larger space than a standard dormitory room. There won’t be set rules that are upheld by a designated student leader and you’ll probably be able to study a little easier without having to worry about the immature party animals that you were grouped up with.

Both options provide a great experience nonetheless and when it comes down to it, your personality plays a role in where you fit in the best. Think it through before deciding where you want to stay because it could either be the best decision of your life or the worst.

Article written by Learners Workshop

Tips-for-Success-Become-an-Optimist

Taking an optimistic approach in life will not only change how you perceive your surroundings but it can also lead to more successful business ventures. Taking your pessimistic mentality and flipping it around can bring a drastic change to your lifestyle. Here are some ways that you can rid of that negativity that you’ve been holding on to for years.

Give and Help

If you focus on everything that’s constantly going wrong in your life, your attitude will portray that. A solution to this is to be a giver. If people tend to ask you for advice, take the time to go out of your way to help them out. By giving unconditionally to others and never doubting your value to society, you will begin to see your lifestyle habits change.

Visualize Yourself in a Successful State

Close your eyes and think of times where you achieved something great and walk through each phase of it step-by-step. Remember that positive, smile-cracking feeling and translate it to the present. Visualize where you want to be and what you want to achieve. Maintain that positivity on your path to success.

Reflect and Appreciate

Take a step back and appreciate what has been given you. It takes time to express gratitude for everything that you have and where you are today, but eventually your perspective on life will be amazingly different.

Jumping out a negative-type of attitude won’t happen in a single day. It takes time. Implement these techniques to your daily life and see what positive changes can come out of it as well.

Anne Sullivan: The Blind Woman Who Taught Helen Keller

By Phin Upham

Hailing from the region of Feeding Hills, Massachussetts, Anne Sullivan was the oldest of her family’s children. Her parents were both illiterate and unskilled. They journeyed to the US in 1860 from Ireland to escape the Great Potato Famine there.

anne-sullivan

When she was eight, she contracted trachoma. She suffered painful infections in her eyes, and went partially blind. To make things worse, her mother died that same year and her father left two years later out of fear that he was inadequate. She was sent to an almshouse in Tewksbury Massachussetts along with her brother, who died three months after arriving at the hospital from a debilitating hip ailment.

Anne underwent some surgeries at the almshouse that helped treat her condition, but ultimately not to any serious effect. As a result, Anne did not develop skills in literature or arithmetic. She could only find work as a housemaid.

It was not until an 1880 inspection of her almshouse that she was able to meet and convince one of the inspectors that she should be sent to the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston. She successfully enrolled there in 1880, but her rough manners made it tough for her in the beginning. Soon, she adapted to schooling and graduated Perkins at the age of 20. She was valedictorian of her class as well.

After her education at Perkins, she took a job working for a man named Arthur Keller. His daughter, Helen, was both blind and deaf. Anne successfully broke barriers of language and sight to teach Helen Keller how to live a fulfilling life.

Racial Diversity in New York City Leading up to 1855

By Samuel Phineas Upham

New York and its harbors were the first point of contact most immigrants had for America, so it became a hotbed for a lot of racial tension well into the present day. New York is a very small space, with regards to square footage, and many different people live in the same area. Throughout New York’s history, this has been a consistent fact.

Inness-George-The-Lackawanna-Valley-1855

Natives

The Lenape people were the first to inhabit the area we know of as New York, and their first encounter with the Western World was with the French. The Dutch would come soon after, sparking a conflict that was short lived. In the end, a combined force of Lenape and Algonquin was crushed by reinforcements from Holland.

English

The English saw an opportunity to strike as the Dutch position was weakened. The Dutch built walls to defend against this aggression, so they brought slaves from Africa to do the work. By the time the English overtook the Dutch and seized the territory, nearly half the population was of African descent.

Irish

The Great Famine in Ireland forced Irish out of their home land and into other areas seeking better opportunity. They were largely a working class people in New York, and they started a riot over legislation passed by the US Congress in 1863. These riots were originally about military conscription and instead sparked a race riot targeting blacks wherever the Irish could find them. This brutal three-day period was known as the New York City Draft Riots, or just “Draft Week”.

Commonwealth v. Hunt: A Landmark Case

By Phin Upham

During the early days of the labor movement, there were crusaders on both sides fighting for favorable conditions. Those that held capital were invoking English legislation related to restraint of trade, which is a bit like a modern day NDA, in order to sue workers who were colluding to get higher wages and better working conditions. Largely, these business interests were winning their cases in court. That’s because they were able to successfully argue the workers were able to use group negotiating power to get higher wages than an individual might be able to through his own negotiations.

RRantoul

A major source of the dispute was the legality of the laws themselves. Restraint of trade had become well fleshed out over the days of the East India Trading Company and English industrialization. The practice was well substantiated by then.

What defense attorneys had to argue was that America was independent of England, and that the common laws were arbitrary and unknowable. Hunt was an important case because it established precedent, and made the courts create clear legal guidelines on when it was ok to work with others in order to gain higher wages or better conditions.

Their ruling made it impossible to prosecute workers who did not take measures that jeopardized public interests. Later cases would expand on this ruling, adding that the collusion could be as few as two workers who used prejudiced means to get higher wages. This made it illegal to acquire higher wages using tactics that would exclude others from the same benefits.

The Benefits of Non-Traditional Schools

By Wood Creek Academy

There are all kinds of ways teenagers can receive an education these days. Obviously, our country has a public school system. You can choose to home school your child as well or send them to a private institution, if you like. However, what many parents don’t know about their educational options could be hurting them. If your child is showing signs that they may be taking the wrong path in life, it’s important you understand what else you could be doing for them.

woodcreekacademy2Namely, you could try sending them to a boarding school for troubled boys. There, they will not only receive a top education, but they’ll also learn all about how to get past certain mental blocks that might be holding them back or break habits that are eventually going to land them behind bars or even worse.

These schools are all about discipline, but they also include things like therapeutic wilderness programs that could go a long way toward helping them heal certain emotional scars they’re currently suffering from. Many parents have hardly recognized the unhappy, angry child they sent away when they come back for vacation.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking you only have traditional options for your boy. If they’re going through a rough time, consider other schools.

Wilderness therapy programs are often the best—and sometimes, the only—way to help your child get back on the right track so they can lead long, fulfilling lives. This is where Wood Creek Academy can help.
